- Tour Itinerary
Today you will start this adventure early. We will pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco at 4:00 a.m. and we will travel for approximately two hours to have a quick breakfast in Mollepata. Our transportation includes cozy blankets in case you need to sleep a few more minutes. After feeding ourselves and resting a little, we will drive for another hour to the starting point of the hike in Challacancha.
Before starting our tour, you will meet the muleteers and cooks who are part of the team and you will do a last check of your luggage. Then, we will begin our relatively easy three-hour hike to Soraypampa (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), where our first camp is located. Along the way, you will enjoy beautiful glaciers and a deep valley. Also, you will see that an Inca water channel follows us most of the way and is still used by farmers in the area today. This stretch is 7 km / 4.35 miles long.
Once in Soraypampa, you will have time to settle into the cozy igloo of our Sky Camp and enjoy your first lunch prepared by our chefs. You will certainly be amazed by their talent in the middle of the mountains. After lunch and recharging your batteries, we will begin our afternoon hike to Laguna Humantay (4,200 m / 13,780 feet), also called the jewel or gem of the mountains. Once you reach the top, you will understand why it is called this way.
The round trip takes about two and a half hours over 3 km / 1.86 miles. The distance may seem short, but, due to its high altitude, you may get tired. You need to go slowly. When you reach the stunning lagoon, you will have plenty of time to catch your breath, enjoy the fantastic scenery and gaze at its turquoise waters against the snowy backdrop. The views here are truly like something from dreamland.
Once we return to camp, you will have time to enjoy a delicious dinner while watching the sun set behind the mountains. It is difficult to describe the energy of this place, but inner peace is as close as one can get. Next, it will be time to head to your Sky Camp for a good night's sleep and gaze at the constellations.
In the morning, you will wake up with the first rays of the day and see the Apu Salkantay while enjoying an energizing coca tea. Afterwards, you will have a nutritious breakfast before embarking on the 7 km trek for approximately
three hours to the highest point of the route, the Abra Salkantay (4,630 m / 15,190 ft). It is a difficult climb along the "path of the 7 snakes", named for its winding path.
Once at the top, you will appreciate the most magnificent view over the surrounding valleys, as well as the Salkantay mountain, located right in front of you (6,271 m / 20,574 ft), which is the second highest in the Cusco region, considered an Apu
(Inca God). You will also be able to observe the mountains: Humantay, Tucarhuay and Pumasillo. After you have enjoyed the views and a rest, you will begin to descend (7 km / 4.35 miles) to our lunch point at Huayracmachay (3,850 m / 12,631 ft). This stretch of the trail is rocky and steep, but you get spectacular views of the surrounding valley.
After a revitalizing lunch, you will enter the edge of the tropical forest, also known as the "cloud forest."
This tour has a distance of 9.5 km / 5.9 miles and takes approximately three and a half hours. Along the way, you will enjoy the greenery of the tropical forest and witness how the environment from the Andes to the Amazon changes quickly and
drastically. You will observe colorful landscapes, unique fauna, native plants and feel that the weather will become much warmer.
After a long day of hiking, you will be glad to arrive at Collpapampa to spend the night. Finally, we will serve you a hearty meal before you relax in our exclusive Mountain Sky View.
Today we will wake you up at 6:00 a.m. for a nutritious breakfast. Then, we will begin our five-hour hike through the stunning Santa Teresa Valley until we reach La Playa. On the trail, you will be able to enjoy the recent and lush landscape surrounded by rivers, wild orchids and many plantations: coffee, banana and avocado; in addition, you will have the opportunity to taste granadilla and passion fruit.
We will continue our hike and continue to the bottom of the mountains to cross to the other side of the valley. In this tropical stretch we will see: waterfalls, birds, fruit trees, flora and fauna.
When we reach La Playa, it will be time to enjoy the last lunch prepared by our talented chefs while we relax and watch a demonstration about coffee. After resting for a moment, we will board the private transport that will take us to the train station in Hidroeléctrica. From there, we will walk 10 km along the tracks
surrounded by lots of vegetation and linked by the Urubamba River; However, you can take the train to Aguas Calientes if you feel exhausted by this part.
Amidst the tropical paradise, you will see beautiful plantations, as well as an immense variety of birds such as the Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru's national bird.
After a three-hour walk, we will arrive in Aguas Calientes; from here, we will take you to your hotel to relax in your comfortable room with private bathroom, hot shower, WiFi, breakfast in the morning and luggage storage that will allow you to leave your things while you visit the town's hot springs. In the evening, we will meet for dinner at a prestigious restaurant before returning to the hotel to rest. Tomorrow you will have to get up before the sun rises and start our last adventure towards the majestic Machu Picchu.
Today is the day you have been longing for since you began your hike. You will visit one of the new Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu. To do so, we will get up before the sun rises to avoid the large crowds at the Inca citadel and better enjoy the soft morning light that falls on the enormous rocks. The entrance opens at 6:00 a.m. and we want to be one of the first to arrive.
From Aguas Calientes, we will take a bus to the Inca citadel before entering and gazing in awe at the incredible construction. Once at the complex, you will enjoy a tour of approximately two hours with your guide and visit the most important parts: houses, temples, terraces, fields, among others. You will truly be amazed by the ingenuity of the Incas that to this day remains a mystery.
In the ancient culture, there were no modern tools such as iron or steel for work. The builders of the city were geniuses in organizing this community in a ustainable and beautiful way on the side of a mountain, even carrying water in canals and aqueducts through its streets for the people to use. When a Peruvian guide showed this place to Hiram Bingham, it was almost unrecognizable, covered in thick vegetation and in a state of decay. Since then, this site has been cleaned and restored; today, it is protected by 10 laws that make it a treasure for the entire world.
After your incredible guided tour in the citadel, you will have the possibility to enjoy one of the additional hikes to the mountain Huayna Picchu (2,720 m / 8,924 ft) or the mountain Machu Picchu (3,000 m / 9,843 ft); these tickets must be reserved in advance. You will be able to contemplate an incredible view over the citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the best panoramas in the world. Later, we will return to Aguas Calientes, where you will enjoy lunch before boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo (your train schedule will depend on availability). From here, our private transportation will be waiting to take you back to your accommodation in Cusco. Finally, you will be able to enjoy a well-deserved rest, although your heart will continue to vibrate high in the Andes like a condor for years to come.
